In Gomer Pyle style, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise
Wow. I've been in Dallas/Irving area fifty years (since 6 mo. old) and when I picked up this book to take a look, I was amazed at all the places to go I didn't know about! I bought a copy and have enjoyed browsing its offerings! What a great gift for anyone new to the area. What am I talking about? I'm not new! It'll make a great gift - period! A must though for newcomers - hey, real estate people, what an idea for new home buyers coming into the area! And there's so many different great tid bits of info. Thanks to the author for all her work making the Metroplex a breeze to enjoy!

Right in my own backyard
I picked this book up as a gift for a client who was staying a week in Dallas and had never been to Texas before. He went through the book and picked places he wanted to go, and apparently had a grand time, because he still raves about his trip.

As I didn't get the book back, I had to purchase another copy and was surprised to see how many interesting places there are in the Metroplex that even I didn't know about (and I've lived here for nearly forever.) I've since recommended this book to my company for future visiting clients and trainees.

Great source of information, excellent organization and primo insight on "must sees".

Cock-A-Moo-Moo
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Co (Juv Trd) (April, 2002)
Authors: Juliet Dallas-Conte and Alison Bartlett
Average review score:

A toddler's delight
As a teacher and mother, I would recommend this book to anyone with young children. My two year old asks for it over and over. It has become a family favorite. The book has a great rhythm and quick paced text. My daughter can't resist mooing and quacking right along with the silly rooster, and I can't resist trying out funny animal voices.

2 - 4 Year Olds Love This BooK!
I read to a group of 28 2 - 4 year olds on a weekly basis as part of a local "Grandpas read to pre-schoolers" program. I stumbled across this book in a search of new kids books at the local library and, quite frankly, thought it would just be filler in my scheduled reading program. To an adult, it is not a particularly impressive little story, no great messages or morals. Little did I know it would turn out to be the most requested book I've read to them this year, with universal appeal to all of my kids - from the brand new 2s to the jaded 4s. I've learned to pause at the appropriate points to build the suspense, then shout out the rooster's mistakes. Watching 28 kids absolutely roaring at this simple story is, well, I won't pretend to explain it, but the kids love this one. I rate it a 5-star based upon audience approval.

Dallas Stoudenmire: El Paso Marshall
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (February, 1980)
Author: Leon Claire Metz
Average review score:

Stoudenmire deserves more recognization
This book was well written and easy to understand. Mr. Metz has managed to make this book easy to understand and fun to read, but with much interest. His wordings were excellent; he used adjectives and even described persons or things with vivid colors. He has added some humors to it and it always kept my full attention.

The "4 Deads in 5 seconds" gunfight was the most thrilling. I felt as if I actually witnessed it all and witnessed folks scattered at the very sight of Marshal.

Hollywood should make a movie on Marshal Stoudenmire. I think he's worthy a movie such as it is for Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp".

Violent El Paso tamed by Stoudenmire
Leon C. Metz was a great author and storyteller with unique writing humor. This book was based on true events. It was well researched and written. I have absolutely no doubts that Mr. Metz attempts to bring out favorable traits of Stoudenmire in order to help him gain much deserved respect and nationwide recognition. Stoudenmire enforced the laws no differently than Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett and Elfego Baca. Stoudenmire deserves the same honor. Stoudenmire's period in this town was awfully short, but very colorful. Stoudenmire had no fear, not even guns or death. He was able to outdraw every opponent. He sent his wild bullets to harvest souls and sent men on their last jolting rides to the cemetery. His large structure and deadly reputation were all El Paso needed to send hard-cored violent outlaws whining and putting their tails between their shaking legs into hiding or digging their own graves. Stoudenmire's toughness and courage was no match for the outlaws combined together.

. . .

This book is highly recommended for folks who seek excitement in Wild West justice and a wild marshal to match!

Decker
Published in Hardcover by Mullaney Corporation (14 December, 1999)
Author: Jim Gatewood
Average review score:

FINALLY-- A FITTING TRIBUTE TO DECKER & HIS DEPUTIES
Congratulations to Jim Gatewood for capturing, with accuracy and excitement, the life and times of Dallas legend Bill Decker, and those who loyally served the citizens of Dallas during his watch. My father, John Rutledge, was a Dallas Morning News police reporter whose actions during the jail riot were detailed by Gatewood as well. This is a must-have for anyone interested in the real history of Dallas.

Exciting Ten Hour Read! Can't wait for the movie!
Gatewood tells a great story about Bill Decker. I couldn't put it down....took a little over 10 hours to read in one setting. From the dark excitement of tales of early Dallas law enforcement to the foggy mysteries of the assassination of President Kennedy, Gatewood weaves a true to life documented tale of the streets of Dallas as seen by Sheriff Bill Decker.

If the Dallas police had listened to Sheriff Bill Decker's security concerns for Lee Harvey Oswald, Mafia hitman Jack Ruby wouldn't have silenced the voice of of Oswald, the "patsy" in the conspiracy to kill the President!

When an assassin is assassinated, there is a conspiracy! (Old French cliche'!)

Depression Desperado: The Chronicle of Raymond Hamilton
Published in Paperback by Eakin Publications (October, 1995)
Author: Sid Underwood
Average review score:

Giving Raymond His Due
Excellent, highly readable, well documented biography of Raymond Hamilton, a colorful Texas bank robber of the 1930's. Hamilton is chiefly remembered today as a sometime accomplice of Clyde Barrow but his own criminal career is equally interesting and far more spectacular.

Depression Desperado is Definitive
Sid Underwood has written an extremely in-depth account of the Gentleman Bandit. Underwood has traced the history of Hamilton and his cohorts, including Bonnie & Clyde, as well as interviewed many people who have since passed away that knew Bonnie & Clyde, including relatives. Besides giving very detailed accounts pulled from records and the interviews, the book is filled with some great photos. Depression Desperado is both historical and entertaining.

A collection as art itself
If you are looking for a good art book that covers some of the best in Mexican Art than look no further. As part of an exhibition that toured Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego, where I was lucky enough to have seen the impressive collection, this book is full of varied works and styles. Although the emphasis is on Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, there are many more artists featured, including Nahum Zenil, Rufino Tamayo, Carlos Orozco Romero, Agustin Lazo, Maria Izquierdo, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gunther Gerzo and of course the others in the "Three Greats," David Alfaro Siquieros and Jose Clemente Orozco to complete the triad masters of Mexican Art. Some of the art is breathtaking ,original and shocking but all pleasing. There are many more artists featured, to numerous to name, but suffice to say that the broad spectrum of Mexican Art is covered, including the works of contemporary artists as Natasha continued to collect into the 1990's, a decade after her husbands passing. As beautiful and magical as the art is, so varied in form, subject and media matter, the text is one that teaches about how this collection came to be. The outstanding essays reflect on the intriguing lives of the art collectors, beginning with their meeting and becoming naturalized Mexican citizens from their European exile. The relationship between Jacques Gelman and the Mexican movie comedian icon Cantinflas, who he discovered, is discussed and the stuff of legend. Jacques Hollywood connections are also featured, both in essay and pictures. The personal relationships both Jacques and Natasha had with Diego and Frida is now legendary. Although they have European(not featured here) Art in their private collection, their real love was for Mexican Art. The Gelmans devotion and dedication to Mexican Art was their baby they never had. They have nutured and shared their gifts with the rest of the world by keeping their collection intact and it speaks for itself as a collective art piece. If you missed the tour than by all means get this book which features all the exhibitions art pieces, short biographies of the artists and an interesting bilingual text. Recommended for art enthusiasts interested in the evolving art of Mexico.

MEXICO'S BEST ARTISTS
Where can you find a collection of the best of Mexico's artists of the 20th century? Contained in these pages spanning four generations in the 20th century are some of the greatest names in Mexican art. The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection presents for the first time a wide span view of the development of Mexico's greatest treasures in art.

Here you will find Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco and the other older greats of the muralist and painting traditions of Mexico. The art of these "Masters" are rich in their expressions of presenting the indigenous art of the people before the public. You will also find these "Masters" experimenting with impressionism, cubism and surrealism but in the end they develop a style unique to their cultural heritage.

Just viewing the "Masters" alone would be enough but Mexico's artists are progressive in their style as we view the work of the younger artists who have made their mark on the artistic scene. Francisco Toledo, Cisco Jimenez and Marco Arce explode upon the scene with their framented narrative texts, irreverance for religion and interpretations of the myths and legends of their land. Their works are just as stunning, provocative and controversial as their elders.

Such a diverse collection shows the viewer the varied styles and development of Mexican art through the 20th Century. Nothing can match it. Art lovers everywhere will appreciate the styles represented in this collection and will gain a deeper appreciation of Mexico's artistic tradition.

Georgia O'Keeffe: The Poetry of Things
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (April, 1999)
Authors: Elizabeth Hutton Turner, Washington, D.C. Phillips Collection, Dallas Museum of Art, and Elizabeth Hutton Turner
Average review score:

wonderful gift
I sent this book as a gift, based on the glowing review on this page. My donee/friend wrote: "What a wonderful surprise and delight the O'Keefe book has brought me today! It is indeed something very special, with elegant color illustrations, plus many photos from various times of her life, and biographical details all through the text. There is a wonderful photo of her (by Ansel Adams) -- she wears a dark sweater, and is sitting, sketching, at the rocky entrance to what may be a cave --- and all of her design ideas seem to be there in the photo: her own interesting form, contrasts of dark and light, austerity yet beautiful rhythms....I had no idea what a pathfinder she was, going her own road by interpreting objects in an entirely personal way. Everything has her magic touch. The color plates are excellent." I have her permission to send these comments to you.

Outstanding book from an outstanding exhibition
This is the companion catalog to the O'Keeffe exhibition at the Phillips gallery in Washington, DC, and is a wonderful volume on O'Keeffe whether or not you were fortunate enough to see this exhibition. What impressed me most about the exhibition (and the book) is how intelligently it was put together. It examines O'Keeffe's development as an artist by tracking both her philosphy and her influences, and some rarely shown works were chosen to represent this in the exhibition (and are reproduced in the book). Of all the books on O'Keeffe that I've read, and of all the exhibitions I've seen of her work, this one by far does the best job of explaining both the artist and her work.

Getting Lean With Anti-Fat Nutrients
Published in Paperback by Pax Pub (March, 1994)
Authors: Dallas Clouatre and James Arden
Average review score:

Scientific knowledge for the layperson
Dr. Clouatre gives you all the facts on the nutritional science behind the various reasons different people get fat and/or stay fat--but he puts it into plain, easy-to-understand language. He explains how "food couplings," vitamins, minerals and basic food nutrients (like amino acids vs. fatty acids) affect my body. This book helps the aging 30 or 40 something learn how to feel and look 20 again! Visiting a place like Puritan's Pride [...] saves you money when you finish this book--you'll want to go out and buy everything Dr. Clouatre recommends!! He focuses on GETTING LEAN, not losing weight, and if your goal is to be healthy, you NEED this book!

Amazing Diet
After following the diet in this book I lost 43 pounds. The diet allows you to eat a lot of food and is easier to follow that stictly protein diets because you never totally feel deprived. You can have a little of every food type, just not together. I was able to stick to it for an extended period of time (about 1 1/2 years) and eat more food than I can normally eat. Unlike low fat diets (which sometimes caused a weight gain) this diet was painless and I never felt hungry. I supplemented with vitamins, but did not use all the supplements listed. It was the diet, and the addition of healthy oil to my diet that worked for me. The book was brief and easy to read. The diet was simple to follow. The biochemical information was valuable.

Henry Moore: Sculpting the 20th Century
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (April, 2001)
Authors: Julian Andrews, Dallas Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, National Gallery of Art (U.S.), and Dorothy M. Kosinski
Average review score:

Outstanding!
This book radiates with the beauty of Henry Moore, and helps us to recognize those more recent sculptors such as Donald Wright, who have perhaps surpassed the master.

Provides Moore enthusiasts with a body of works
Moore is one of the most beloved sculptors of the 20th century, yet his work has fallen out of favor with the modern critics: this seeks to reassess Moore's crucial contribution to art of the last century, examining his early experiments with primitivism and his later probe into modernist pieces. The focus on his early works in particular provides Moore enthusiasts with a body of works and approaches not seen in many other considerations of his works.
